"Through the waters"
In the book of Isaiah we read, "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee." This promise of Love as always present to guard and guide in ways comprehensible to human thought was wonderfully fulfilled in a bygone experience. This circumstance was an almost literal illustration of the words quoted, and it occurred during the period when the truth about God and man as taught in Christian Science was dawning upon consciousness.
In many ways the new understanding of Immanuel, "God with us," had been proven in the healing of physical and mental discord, but the true import of Mrs. Eddy's teaching and example, by which she demonstrated that thought must be purified and spiritualized in order to discern God's spiritual creation, had not been fully apprehended. In the light of a clearer understanding of God's ways of revealing Himself to those who are seeking to know Him, what was at one time recalled as an instance of preservation from danger has grown to be a constant reminder and reassurance that absolute reliance upon the Principle of all good in times of stress and fear never fails to bring deliverance, even if the struggle is seemingly prolonged and overwhelming.
A party of girls had gone to bathe in the river at some distance from the station homestead in the afternoon of a very warm summer day. The river, like many others in the subtropical districts of New South. Wales where the occurrence took place, was subject to sudden floods from heavy rainfall, and treacherous holes and shifting sands made this one unsafe on account of recent "freshes." As only one or two of the party were able to swim at all, and the current was running strong, the ford was crossed to find a suitable bathing place. For protection from the sun while in the water, straw hats were pinned on.
