As Christian Science has been a great blessing to me, and Mrs. Eddy a true Samaritan, I feel it is only just to acknowledge her word and works. My knowledge of the existence of divine Principle, Love and Truth, came unexpectedly. About six years ago business failure, mental worry, and the death of my wife, completely wrecked my health. Having been treated by all the doctors within range of where I was located, I finally gave up all hope of ever being of any service to the world or of value to my children. By mere chance I picked up a copy of the Sentinel in the hotel at which I was a guest, and idly glancing at one of the articles I read two sentences that impressed me in some way, so I wrote them in a memorandum book. The first was, "God is love;" the second, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494). I had never before seen or read a line of Christian Science literature.
Some three weeks later when the errors and mistakes of my life seemed to overwhelm me and there appeared to be no possible way to overcome the difficulties in my path, these quotations came to mind. I pulled the book out of my pocket and after reading the lines regained my equilibrium. Having observed some of the books at the library, I at once began to read all I could find, and I paid my last five dollars for a copy of Science and Health. Meantime I began to attend church services regularly, studying the people and asking those I met for information about Science. As a result of my study, strength of mind and body has been regained and the many blessings received since are too numerous to mention. The Bible has become a new book to me, and all my troubles are being overcome as I learn to look to the true source for help and strength.
Christian Science has never failed to meet all demands, and my fervent prayer is that I may continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of the truth. I am truly thankful for the good it has done for me, and grateful to Mrs. Eddy for the patient love and the sacrifices she made in giving Science and Health to the world. — Tom M. Barnes, Bonham, Texas.
