[Written for the Sentinel]

A Tribute

That thou hadst kept
The tablet of thy mind so clean and fair
That God could write thereon His precious word
Of love and healing to a sin-sick world,
Were miracle enough! Yet great this also:
That thou couldst stand upon that Horeb height
And hold this message high for men to see.
Divinely taught, divinely strengthened, thou!
A steadfast, pure intent within thy heart,
A yearning love for all humanity;
Unmoved alike by scorn or hate or fear,
Unspoiled by pride or praise or flattery.

As one on whom
That lifted truth has shed its tender light
And brought the power of a conscious faith,
The joy and peace of longing satisfied,—
I touch thy garment's hem with grateful lips
And bless thee for thy life of purity.
