It was about the middle of March, 1914, that I first heard of Christian Science. At that time a diseased condition of one leg caused me to feel very much worried. The physician said he would do his best to help me, but he could give no assurance that there would be a complete cure. I firmly believed my affliction to be in conformity with God's will, and was about to submit patiently to what seemed to be the inevitable when a friend called and set me right with regard to this question. I now know that God does not send disease upon us, for He is Love only. I listened to my friend's explanations with close attention and read with great interest the writings which she gave me. From that day on I used the leg freely, the pain disappeared, and there has been no return of the inflamed condition, despite the fact that I am doing all my work, including the washing, and have often taken long walks.
Next to the study of the Bible I began to read the Herold and the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and also attended the Christian Science services regularly. I may say here with a sense of deep gratitude that many have been the troubles from which I have since been freed. For fourteen years I had suffered with periodical attacks of headache, also with vomiting, and a bowel disorder which often kept me from attending to my household duties; but I have been freed from these ailments. During the two winters before the last I was bedridden for some time on account of lung trouble, whereas there has been nothing of the kind during the last year; in fact I feel better now than I have for twenty years.
A year ago my son became an apprentice in another locality. He would often suffer with headaches, and there was a sense of discord between him and his employer. With my son's consent I asked for Christian Science treatment in his behalf, and soon the inharmony and the attacks of headache disappeared. That Christian Science is a "very present help in trouble" has also been shown to us in a case of financial difficulty. After the war broke out my husband had to take part in the guarding of the frontiers, and as the family had been depending entirely on his earnings, of which we were now deprived, we found ourselves in reduced circumstances. The assistance received from the war relief fund of The Mother Church therefore meant much ; and it was also proven to us that this help was not given as the world giveth, for an adjustment of our circumstances took place in a very unexpected manner.
