The Lewiston (Maine) Journal
One of the greatest marvels of the present age is the spiritual awakening that has come into public notice during the last quarter of a century. More wonderful still is the fact that this tremendous uplift in society has almost wholly been brought about by the prophetic vision of a lone woman struggling against a hostile world.
Christian Science does not claim to be a new religion, but is simply a revival and restitution of the teachings of Christ Jesus. It has met with the same reception that has been faced by every other reform. Material science was fast fettering the minds of men and decimating the pews of every church when Mrs. Eddy appeared, bringing her message on the wings of truth and love. Her reception was that of every other great reformer, for the world never willingly accepts a new idea. And yet she simply brought the exact doctrine that was taught by Jesus on the far-off shores of Galilee. It was he who said to his disciples: "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel . . . And these signs shall follow them that believe . . . They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do." This was the religion of early Christianity. It was the uniting of faith and works, and it was this that built up the early church.
For three hundred years after the crucifixion the disciples followed this injunction and healed the sick, as they had been bidden to do by the Master. It was this that helped to overcome the materialistic opposition to their work, . . . and it is this feature that is propelling Christian Science forward with such tremendous strides. This is but a portion of the work of Christian Science, as the spiritual uplift is even greater, and by its teachings men are coming nearer to God.
