Expression

Among its fundamental teachings Christian Science upholds the Scriptural truth expressed in the first chapter of Genesis, namely, that man is the image and likeness of God. In amplifying this statement Mrs. Eddy speaks of man as the reflection, the manifestation, the expression of Deity. Let us see what man as "expression" means.

In heralding the appearance of the Christ-idea John the Baptist said, "No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him." The Son of God, then, is the declaration of God. What declares God? Does mortality, sensuality, evil, sin, disease, or death declare God? Can perfect spiritual being be expressed in such manifest opposites? Do we not rather see God expressed in all that appears of purity, good, holiness, health, and life?

What was manifested by that highest expression of the Son of God, Jesus the Christ? Was it not always good? We see him in his public ministry as he went along the street of his native city. When sin confronted him he spoke the word, and behold, the sinner was cleansed, the sin disappeared. He entered Peter's house, where the disciple's wife's mother lay "sick of a fever," and the fever left her,"—health was seen in its place and there was rejoicing. Let us go with him along the streets of Nain, when a sorrowing mother was following her only son to his last resting-place. At the approach of the great Nazarene the procession halted. A moment more and life was expressed where death before seemed to hold sway. With the Master it was ever the declaration of God, of Truth, Life, and Love. The well-beloved Son had declared the Father. Everywhere that Jesus went, life, health, and holiness were expressed at his command.
