Christian Science neither teaches nor practises healing by "faith," as the term is commonly understood. Every healing which has taken place in the practice of Christian Science has resulted from the spiritual understanding of reality. The spiritual universe, which is the expression of God, is recognized in Christian Science to be perfect. And man, made in the image and likeness of God, as the spiritual idea of God reflects the nature of the perfect Mind. Seemingly opposed to the spiritual sense of being is the material sense of things. It is the material sense of things which is the seeming cause of every form of sickness; and it has been proved time and again in Christian Science that as the understanding of man's true spiritual selfhood is gained the ills of the flesh disappear.

Speaking of the terms "belief" and "faith" in their relation to spiritual understanding, Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 297): "Until belief becomes faith, and faith becomes spiritual understanding, human thought has little relation to the actual or divine;" and, as has been said, it is spiritual understanding which is the "curative agency" in Christian Science.
