A few years ago I was practically a physical and mental wreck, having been ill for ten years. I had exhausted all material systems of treatment and was then undergoing a fast. I firmly believed that if I were able to complete the fast I would be healed, but at the end of ten days I was forced to abandon it, a well-known specialist saying that if I continued, the result would probably prove fatal. Needless to say, I was extremely despondent and discouraged, as I felt my only hope for recovery was gone.
At this time my sister brought me a copy of Science and Health, begging me to read it and also to have Christian Science treatment. Although I did not expect to be healed, I consented, thinking I would read the book through as a matter of courtesy, since it had been presented to me as a gift. Before I had read half of its contents I realized it contained the "pearl of great price," and began its study in earnest. After one or two treatments, through a misunderstanding I was left for a day and night without help, but I was able to arise and perform the simple duties about the home, including the care of my three years' old son, although I had been warned by physicians not to exert myself.
I have been healed of numerous ailments, including a bad case of eye trouble. The doctors said I would never be well again, as my entire nervous system had been shattered, and one very prominent nerve specialist said if I did not get relief at once I would suffer a complete mental and physical breakdown within six months, which would result in insanity, and advised that I should not be left alone. When informed that I was trying Christian Science, the doctor said to let me try it, as I must be humored, but that I would soon be back in the old rut again. Despite this, I was quickly healed of everything, with the exception of the eye trouble, which yielded more slowly.
