The Lectures

The remarks of former Governor West in introducing the Hon. Clarence A. Buskirk, who lectured on Christian Science for Second Church of Christ, Scientist, were in part as follows:—

It is quite likely that curiosity has had more or less of a hand in leading me here this evening, for although personal friends who were Christian Scientists had often told me of the beauties of this faith and of its success in healing the sick and relieving sorrow and distress, I was never thoroughly impressed until I was advised of the coming of the distinguished lecturer, who I was informed had been a fellow sailor upon the political seas, though after he had landed safely in public office he had seen fit to depart therefrom and enter the field of his present activities.

I think I am safe in saying that few positions offer better opportunity than public office for the study of human life and its problems. Here wealth and poverty, vice and crime, pass in daily review; here the harpies gather, and the direful effects of greed and avarice and the oppression of the weak by the strong are uncovered. Here truths are burned into one which can never be forgotten. And what are these truths? They are first, the absolute futility of many of our attempted efforts to bring about a higher standard of government; and second, that reform must start with the individual. Good government must have for its foundation a high standard of citizenship. No government can be stronger than the man at its center, and this truth must be driven home to every citizen before material progress can be made.
