[Written for the Sentinel]

Rend Thou the Veil

When burn the temple's tapers dim,
And slumber priests within their stalls;
When choirs forget their God to hymn,
And silence hangs like funeral palls;
While grope we for Thy altar rail,
And miss the cup, and lose the bread,—
From out the darkness and the dread
We cry, Rend Thou the veil!

When hopes decay and joy is fled,
Beclouding sight with bitter tears;
When wealth of words leaves grief unsaid,
And burd'ning minutes seem like years;
When all we do doth naught avail,
Seems farther step we cannot go,—
Then hear when out our direst woe
We cry, Rend Thou the veil!

The flesh seems strong, the spirit weak,
But mighty Thou, O Love divine!
In vain Thou wilt not let us seek,
And bright, through mists, Thy truth will shine.
We shall not sink, we cannot fail,
Love finds the cup, faith grasps the bread;
Immersed in radiance Truth has shed
We cry, There is no veil!
