[Written for the Sentinel]

The Heart's Needs

More light we need to flood life's dreary spaces
With a bright, quickening ray;
More light to lead us on to higher places,
To guide us day by day.
And when we seek the one immortal Mind,
All, all of light already ours we find.

More truth we need to strengthen our endeavor,
More truth to speed the thought
To heights where human sense is stilled forever
And man of God is taught.
Christ said, I am the life, the truth, the way.
The truth that was his own is ours today.

More love we need,—the love that, all-embracing,
Attuned to good alone,
Finds a new peace the olden woes effacing,
And every joy its own.
If upon perfect Love we lean, oh, then
We know true peace on earth, good will to men!
