In March, 1913, through the silent example of a friend, I was led to attend Christian Science services regularly. This turning toward Truth at once effected two demonstrations of healing, though they were not then recognized as such. First, it made clear to me that to be sincere I should abandon material medicines on turning to Christian Science; second, it healed me of a lifelong habit of self-indulgence in lying abed late, for to my amazement it got me out of bed Sunday morning at seven o'clock.
After attending church for a few weeks I suddenly discovered that another lifelong habit, profanity, had left me. Also every one remarked upon my improved physical appearance, and one daily associate informed me that my irritability of temper had disappeared. I said to myself that surely there must be truth in Christian Science, so began to study it in earnest. Very soon I was able to demonstrate the healing of attacks of dizzy headache, toothache, influenza, pleurisy, coughs, and various other physical ailments. Indeed, the first two years I was kept busy overcoming repeated attacks of various sorts, and in gradually correcting errors of belief and learning to think rightly. There was far more to do than I had any conception of in my former self-complacent life.
Christian Science has healed me of agnosticism, self-complacency, slavery to medicine, self-indulgence, nervousness, drinking, smoking, profanity, gambling, stomach disorder, sleeplessness, chronic bowel trouble, hemorrhoids, kidney disease, liver disease, hay fever, eye trouble, and worry. This seems like a formidable array of ailments, but their absolute nothingness and want of power have been fully demonstrated through Christian Science. I am learning the meaning of obedience, love, and gratitude, also am following on to know the great joy of becoming a channel of good to my neighbor.
