The Sun
An article in The Sun contains a reference to Christian Science which shows that the writer, if he has ever read any authorized Christian Science literature, has failed to grasp its teaching. Christian Science does not teach that mortal man has nothing the matter with him, nor does it endeavor to "kid people" that such is the case, but it goes to the root of matters. It begins with the foundational premise that a good God, the divine Principle of the universe, created all, and that there are not two creators, but one. It teaches that the creation can but express the attributes of its creator, such as justice, mercy, goodness, and that evil, sin, disease, and death have no foundation in absolute truth, but are the results of false belief. They are merely negations of the truth about God and His creation, including man made in His image and likeness.
In the text-book of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 518), Mrs. Eddy says, "All the varied expressions of God reflect health, holiness, immortality—infinite Life, Truth, and Love." Again, on page 460 she says : "Sickness is more than fancy ; it is solid conviction. It is therefore to be dealt with through right apprehension of the truth of being." On page 218 we read, "When we wake to the truth of being, all disease, pain, weakness, weariness, sorrow, sin, death, will be unknown, and the mortal dream will forever cease."
This is in accordance with the statement of Jesus as recorded in John, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Our Master not merely said these words, but put them into practice. The freedom he brought to those who came to him, and who were receptive to spiritual truth, was freedom from all manner of disease; and surely it is reasonable to acknowledge that the spiritual law of Truth which was then operative, and of which he availed himself, is still operative, just as certainly as the mathematical law that one and one are two has been, is, and always will be operative. A real basic truth and law can never be anything but active and operative.
