Deep gratitude impels me to give this testimony in recognition...
Deep gratitude impels me to give this testimony in recognition of all the good which I have received through Christian Science. About two and a half years ago I became acquainted with its teachings. Although I had faith in God, it at first seemed almost unbelievable to me that divine Truth should be adequate to the healing of all disease; but after attending Christian Science services twice, it became clear to me that the truth as presented there led one closer unto God and to the understanding of His Christ. Then was also revealed to me the meaning of the Scriptural passage: "Ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. And I will be found of you, saith the Lord." There was a swelling on my head about the size of a walnut and it was as hard as a stone. I attended the services regularly, in the firm belief that if all disease could be healed through the power of divine Truth and Love, I too could be healed of the trouble with which I was afflicted. In about three months' time the swelling became soft, and one morning it broke. Three months later it had completely disappeared.
In the winter of 1914 I contracted a severe cold and cough with distress in the chest and shoulders. My husband was rather insistent and telephoned to a physician, who came at once and diagnosed the case as an attack of acute lung trouble. He prescribed medicine, and said that I should stay in bed in a heated room and have warm applications. I took the medicine that evening and was unable to sleep the following night on account of the pain. The next morning, however, I got up and read both the Herold and the Bible. Although I had made up my mind not to use any material means, I could not resist the temptation to take medicine once more. About two hours later everything seemed to grow dark before my eyes, and I felt that I must lie down. This was not possible, however, on account of the severe vomiting which had set in. I now threw away the medicine, sat down, and continued reading Christian Science literature. When the physician came again two days later, I had already done all the cleaning in my flat and I opened the door for him. He was very much surprised and said, "You certainly got quick help." I did not get the drug which he again prescribed, but relied solely on divine help, and it proved efficacious.
In the autumn of 1915 I suffered the greatest pain and was unable to sleep at night for three weeks as a result of severe internal inflammation. Being unable to overcome the error alone, I asked a practitioner in Hannover for treatment. The pain ceased after a few days, and a week later I was completely free from any trouble. I had always greatly dreaded childbirth, and being unable to overcome my sense of fear and anxiety, it seemed that possibly I might have a recurrence of a past experience and I therefore asked for treatment. I certainly did get help, for I was freed from any sense of fear. On Dec. 16 I rejoiced over the arrival of a little girl, though previous to the birth, as things did not seem to progress, the midwife urged that medical help be secured immediately; but I asked for treatment in Christian Science. This was at nine o'clock, and about an hour later I became aware of divine help, for the birth then went on normally.
