It is with rejoicing that I thank God that the way...
It is with rejoicing that I thank God that the way is still open to follow Jesus' teachings as set forth in the Bible, and that through the study of Christian Science, as given in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," man can be and is being released from bondage to so-called man made laws. I am grateful for the physical healings received, but still more for the spiritual uplift and the understanding in a degree of what Love means. When a small child I asked my mother, "What is God?" and was told that "God is love," but I never saw this statement proven until after taking up the study of Christian Science, about forty years later.
For several years before coming to Christian Science I desired a pure life and tried everything I could find to lift me up and set me free. Finally I walked into a church, the services of which seemed different from any I had noticed before, and learned afterward that it was a Christian Science church. I saw that these people had something, and promised myself to find out what it was; but after the service I hurried away, not feeling fit to be in their presence. Later I learned that there were practitioners, so called on one and asked for moral healing. When the gentleman said my lameness would also be healed, I became inwardly resentful. Nevertheless, I had the treatment, paid for it, and left with the belief that I had not found what I sought, for how could I be healed of lameness after having been on crutches three times from three different accidents. However, a few mornings later I arose from bed and walked without hobbling. I had been used to climbing out of bed and off street-cars; now it seemed as if I could jump from the top of a car if necessary.
When about twelve years of ago I had fallen through a barn, alighting on my head, and was unconscious for twelve hours. As a result of this fall I was left deaf in one ear, and after being in a serious railway accident, my hearing was much worse. A specialist said the hearing in one ear was all gone and in the other partially so. Some months after being healed in Christian Science of lameness, I went to a practitioner to have help for this trouble. About a week later I discovered that I was hearing through the right ear,—the one which had been deaf,—while holding a telephone receiver to my left ear.
