Several years ago I was instantaneously healed of the liquor habit by Christian Science treatment. I had heard something of Christian Science, as my wife had been reading the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, having purchased the book about a year previous, when my brother was healed of blindness in one eye after noted specialists had given up the case as hopeless. What I had heard, though, seemed to make me antagonistic, so at the time of my healing I had no faith in Christian Science whatever.
One afternoon, however, becoming thoroughly disgusted with myself after having drunk more than usual because of saloon sociability, I went to my office and attended to the most important mail, then looked up a Christian Science practitioner. I did not think of taking treatment, but having no confidence in drug cures and honestly admitting to myself that I did not know what Christian Science was, I wanted to find out something about it. After explaining my mission and stating that my only trouble was the habit of drinking too much, the practitioner asked if I would like to be free from the habit. This was a hard question to answer, as for years it had seemed that all my pleasure was associated with drink, and the reply was that I did not believe I wanted to quit entirely but would like to be more moderate in my desires.
An explanation of Christian Science was then given me, and from a business point of view it seemed logical and sound in argument, but the beautiful words which were so natural to the expounder seemed unnatural to a worldly, material consciousness. However, it promised healing, freedom, joy, and gave convincing testimony of a loving God, Principle, Spirit, Mind, "who healeth all thy diseases" and is "no respecter of persons." Treatment was asked for and given, and I was requested to call again the next morning. That afternoon and evening I drank as usual, but the next morning refrained from doing so, as I had promised, and promptly at nine 0'clock called to keep the engagement. I had been listening only a short time to the continued explanation of Christian Science when I expressed the desire to be entirely freed from this bondage. Another treatment was given, and for the first time in years I went to work free from any desire for liquor.
