From the Unreal to the Real

EVER since the writer came into Christian Science the chapter entitled Footsteps of Truth in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" has been much treasured and loved. When she first began to read the text-book, this chapter seemed a special and personal message. At a recent Wednesday evening meeting selections read from it were much enjoyed and new and higher meanings were realized. Then the sense of freedom which Christian Scientists experience on their journey from the unreal to the real was made clear.

In that wonderful eight chapter of Romans Paul tells us that "the carnal mind is enmity against God." Christian Scientists know well how true this is. The carnal mind is a network of wrong thinking about God and man, and only as we begin to rid ourselves of it do we take our first step toward the real, the realm of infinite Love. One might ask how we are to overcome the carnal mind. Mrs. Eddy has answered this in Science and Health, where she says (p. 201): "We cannot fill vessels already full. They must first be emptied. . . . The way to extract error from mortal mind is to pour in truth through flood-tides of Love." On page 1 she says, "Desire is prayer." We are liberated from error, or the carnal mind, and experience and enjoy harmony and freedom, just in proportion to our desire for righteousness, for where righteousness is there is peace.

No one need think he can advance in Christian Science while clinging to old garments, to pride of worldly possessions and of mere intellectuality. All these must go before the powerful search-light of Truth. If our desires are sincere we shall indeed experience freedom in our journey toward the light. Fears and doubts will vanish into nothingness, and perfect assurance will be ours. As we progress we are encouraged and refreshed, for all the while the "old man" is being "put off" and the "new man" is being manifested.
