I first learned of Christian Science through the instantaneous healing of my wife after many years of suffering. The healing seemed so remarkable to me that I could not understand or believe it until convinced by her sleeping peacefully throughout the night. It did not seem possible that she could sleep, for she had been suffering from what was said to be a tubercular boil. Every hour or so I woke up and listened to her breathing, until toward morning I was fully convinced that she was not suffering but was sleeping calmly and soundly.
At that time I was suffering from sleeplessness, and the following night, when I could not sleep, instead of resorting to material remedies I read Science and Health for a while. I then went to bed again and slept until morning, and have not since been troubled in that way. The next day, while smoking a cigar as was my custom, I realized that my desire to smoke had gone. My taste for tobacco had been entirely destroyed, as was later proved, for I have never smoked again or felt the least desire to do so.
After reading Science and Health for another week I felt like discarding my glasses, although they had been used for many years and the oculist had informed me that stronger lenses would be needed every few years, as my eyes were subjected to a constant strain. I feared, however, that if they were laid aside I could not do my work satisfactorily. After another two weeks I told a practitioner of my experience with smoking and also as regards glasses, with the result that the next morning I went to work without taking them with me. Within a month or six weeks my eyes were perfectly normal. Although the Bible and Science and Health were read each morning before going to work and all the evening, I felt no strain, but on the contrary was relieved of the terrible headaches which had caused me so much suffering.
