About a year and a half ago I became acquainted with the teachings of Christian Science through my sister. I was then in a state of utter ignorance with regard to the nature of God and His power. I rarely read the Bible; in fact I had entirely stopped doing so during the last few years, as I failed to understand most of what I read, and besides seemed to come across contradictions. I suffered severely from nervousness with its many accompanying symptoms, for it resisted medical treatment, to which I had resorted at various times. Frequent headaches set in, and they grew almost unbearable.
While in this condition I became engaged in conversation with a Christian Scientist, who willingly gave me information on the subject in which I was beginning to take an interest. While she lovingly gave me some explanation relative to the all-power and love of God, the pain left me all of a sudden, and was replaced by an ineffable sense of well-being and happiness. Never before in my life did I experience such calm and contentment, and I thought that this must be a condition akin to heaven. I did not then know that when reliance on God, on spiritual Truth, when love toward our neighbor and the hope of complete salvation from sin, disease, and death, is attained, we begin to experience heaven right here on earth.
Later I was freed from neuralgia with two treatments. I have also discarded glasses, which it had seemed necessary for me to wear, owing to an eye trouble said by the physicians to have existed from birth; and I have done so without experiencing the slightest ill effect. On the contrary, I can now see better without glasses, and besides, I feel much freer. Through the diligent study of the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and the other authorized Christian Science literature in German, as well as through the explanations which were most willingly given me by the practitioner, I have reached the point where I can believe and say understandingly that God is All-in-all, that "in him we live, and move, and have our being," and that we can never attain the truth which makes free without reliance on God.
