The Lectures

The lecture on Christian Science at the court-house drew a good-sized audience. The Hon. C. D. Wright, county judge of Deaf Smith county, in introducing the speaker, Virgil O. Strickler, said in part:—

A year ago I knew nothing about the teachings of Christian Science, but since then I have read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. This book teaches us to study the Bible with a new understanding, "to hold hatred in abeyance with kindness, to conquer lust with chastity, revenge with charity, and to overcome deceit with honesty" (p. 405). He who will address you this evening is an advocate of these ideas, and is a deep student of Christian Science, which is synonymous with the Christ-principle. You are thus here to learn what Christianity means from a scientific standpoint. This man is devoting his life to a cause that is trying to bring the yearning, seeking, restless masses back to an understanding of the simple teachings of the gentle Nazarene. Like all real Scientists, he is a soldier for good against unbelief, following Christ's command to "preach the gospel," and trying to make you hear anew the equally imperative command to "heal the sick."
