In a sermon by an evangelist, as reported in a recent issue of your paper, the statement was made that Christian Science "takes away the hope of heaven through the blood of Jesus Christ." It is neither the intention nor the desire to dispute any person's right to think as he pleases on the question of salvation, but it seems well to ask the privilege of making a statement through your columns as to what Christian Science teaches on this subject.

Christian Science gives the understanding that the shedding of human blood could not have been necessary to appease the wrath of God, but that the real blood of the cross is Christ Jesus' proof of the power of Love to destroy hate, of the power of Truth to destroy error, and of the power of Life to annul the belief of death. Christian Science shows that it is in the life, works, and glorious resurrection of Christ Jesus that mankind finds real hope and proof of redemption. St. Paul expresses this in the fifth chapter of Romans: "For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life." Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, makes this very clear in the chapter entitled Atonement and Eucharist, in the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and the subject is further illumined in her book "No and Yes."

Christian Science shows why a sick body or a sick mind cannot glorify God, and proves that neither exists as the result of the law of God. It sets about to destroy sickness and sin through the operation of the law of good, the law of God, as taught and demonstrated in the life and works of our Wayshower, Christ Jesus. No Christian Scientist, however, has ever claimed to have the understanding of divine Love that Jesus manifested, but present proofs give the positive assurance that we shall finally "grow into that stature of manhood in Christ Jesus" (Science and Health, p. 350) by which we shall be able to fulfil all his commands and emulate him in all things, including the unfailing destruction, even to human sense, of everything that is unlike divine Love.
