[Written for the Sentinel]

Reflection

Into the night the lighthouse sends
Its guiding ray,
Cheering the bark that landward wends
Its storm-tossed way.

Firm on the rock, unmoved by storm
Or wind or foam,
It shines, unfailing, bright and warm,
To lead men home.

And weary sailors in the gale
Fresh courage find,
Until at length they furl the sail—
The storm behind.

Thus shining through the night's dark pall,
With gentle might,
Each separate beam unites with all
In one great light.

Let your light shine, the Master said;
And so may we
By faithful work Truth's brightness shed
O'er earth's dark sea.
