When Christian Science came into my life, the clouds of...
When Christian Science came into my life, the clouds of sense hung so dark and so heavy that little light seemed visible. I had been a church-member from childhood, and had dearly loved the services and tried faithfully to follow in the way I was taught; but I was constantly reaching out for something that would help to solve my many problems. I was teaching a class of eighteen little boys and was very successful in the way of keeping them interested in Bible stories, but when it came to the point of making these stories practical I failed. With tears I would ask myself why I could not help the boys to overcome temper, impatience, and selfishness, and would have to acknowledge that it was beause I did not know how to overcome my own sense of evil. After a few years it was my privilege to teach a class in a Christian Science Sunday school, and such a joy it was to me, for I had found the "key" with which to solve not only the mental problems but the physical as well, and for fourteen years I have been able to prove beyond a doubt that I have found the Christ-method of overcoming evil with good.
My healing was in some instances quite rapid, and in others it had to be a process of regeneration. I found that when willing to resign myself to God's wisdom and let His will, not mine, be done, I responded to the healing power of God's dear love. Inaction of the bowels, supposedly inherited, was quickly overcome, although pronounced incurable by materia medica. Many other ailments melted away into their native nothingness as I obtained a clearer sense of God and His Christ as revealed through our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. Christian Science has taught me how to be faithful in the little things of every-day life and to make all work a sacred task. It has made me a better wife and truer friend. It has helped me to see the cowardice of sarcasm, the cruelty of criticism, and the danger of gossip. It has made me willing to look within, has given me courage to persist in overcoming false beliefs, and has also made plain that evil is not personal.
I am grateful for our periodicals, and also to those who contribute so faithfully and lovingly to them. Our Lesson-Sermons keep us close to God if we follow the light they reveal. Words fail to express my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy, who had the courage, faith, and love to stand by her convictions and prove to a weary, sin-sick world that God, divine Love, is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent, and who has taught us how to trust Him.
