I wish to tell of a few instances in which the efficacy of Christian Science as a healing power has been proven in our home. My mother took up the study of this truth when I was six years old, and was healed of invalidism by reading the literature. When I was quite a child she awoke one night at ten o'clock to find me unconscious and to sense dangerously ill. She immediately began to treat me, at intervals rousing me and having me repeat "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468) with her. She continued her work until about two in the morning, when I was so much better that she lay down and slept the remainder of the night. In two days more I was entirely well. The illness was a serious throat condition.
In my home now with my two babies, Christian Science is an ever present help, for the little ones escape many things which mortal mind says children must have. When my elder child was four weeks old she passed a week with no movement of the bowels. At the end of that time fear entered in and material means were resorted to, but the same condition returned. My mother had been treating her, and about the fifty day of the second week she called my attention to a testimony in the Sentinel of a child with the same trouble. but much more serious, who was healed in Christian Science. After reading the testimony I felt that if the parents of that child could trust so firmly I certainly could with my small problem. In less than half an hour normal action was restored, and the child has never had the slightest return of the trouble. When my fear was allayed, the demonstration was complete.
Christian Science is a preventive as well as a curative. In October, 1913, a stubborn cold manifested itself with the children and would not yield to treatment. One afternoon my little girl manifested the usual symptoms of whooping-cough, but immediately I declared the truth, and as a result of the work which my mother and I did, my children suffered little inconvenience.
