The Lectures

Before a large and representative audience at Elks' Theater, Dr. Francis J. Fluno delivered a lecture on Christian Science. He was introduced by Atty. M. E. Hickey, who said in part:—

Some of my closest personal friends are Christian Scientists. From my knowledge of them, and from observation of others of that belief, I know that Christian Scientists are cheerful, hopeful, and optimistic, qualities that enter largely into one's success in his chosen work. They assure us with all confidence that it is possible for them to be thus cheerful, hopeful, and optimistic under all circumstances, because their faith and belief are founded on the truth.

Civilization has been an evolution, a growth. In fact, civilization marks the path of the human race in its groping, its struggles, and its aspirations to reach the ultimate truth, because it is the truth that makes us free. As we turn the pages of history and look back at the progress man has made, we see the way all strewn with discarded beliefs. Each age has held certain things as true; but as time progressed, as the human mind became freer and threw off the old beliefs and superstitions, as it became stronger and more capable of discovering new evidence and weighing it, those things held sacredly true have been discarded as false, and the succeeding ages have accepted the new truths, so called, which in turn have likewise been discarded. Progress has been possible, because the mind of man has been capable of giving up its old beliefs when convinced that those beliefs were not founded on truth.
