The Christian Scientist effects the healing of both sin and...
The News
The Christian Scientist effects the healing of both sin and disease without any dependence upon the "faith" of the patient in his efforts, and most emphatically without the aid of the action of the human mind either upon the mind or the body of the patient. This healing is performed through the understanding of the teachings of Jesus the Christ as manifested in his works throughout Palestine, and by that alone. Moreover, Christian Science makes no claim to be the sole agent, nor to have an exclusive monopoly of divine healing, but endeavors to show that all churches and all individuals may, and should, approximate the same work in the same way if they will allow that Mind to be in them "which was also in Christ Jesus."
To our clerical critic is attributed the statement that Mrs. Eddy denies the usefulness of such sanative measures as pure food, air, and water. This is wholly a mistake, and there is no part of her writings that can be made to bear out any such assumption. On the contrary, Christian Scientists are insistent upon proper sanitation, and purity of food, air, water, environment, and thought, and they will be found in the forefront battling for these as firmly as do others whose religious beliefs and practices differ from theirs. In writing of the influence of Christian Science upon the character of those who live and practise its teaching, Mrs. Eddy says in "Retrospection and Introspection" (p. 70): "The right teacher of Christian Science lives the truth he teaches. Preeminent among men, he virtually stands at the head of all sanitary, civil, moral, and religious reform."
The speaker's comment upon the Christian Science teaching of the unreality of matter places him at variance with such eminent world thinkers as Lord Kelvin, Sir William Crookes, Sir Robert Ball, Prof. Wilhelm Ostwald, Prof. Noah K. Davis, Professor Bowne, and practically every physical scientist in the world today. Moreover, this teaching is not now the exclusive property of Christian Science, but it is a portion of the curriculum at all the leading seats of learning throughout the world.
