Yorkshire Gazette
In a recent issue I notice the account of Mr.—'s address to the Cawood Wesley Guild, in which he is reported as coupling Christian Science, spiritualism, mesmerism, etc., and is also reported as stating that "the human being has two minds,—the subjective and the objective."
May I, as a Christian Scientist, state that Christian Science has absolutely nothing to do with spiritualism, mesmerism, etc., and also that Christian Science is engaged in teaching mankind the ever-presence and omnipotence of that one infinite Mind whom men call God, and is in no way engaged in teaching any theory of two minds such as the critic puts forth. In fact, Christian Science shows clearly that all of mankind's troubles have come from these very mortal theories of more than one Mind. Christian Science is, however, teaching the reality and supremacy of this one and only Mind, and is proving to mankind the availability and practicality of this teaching in the healing of multitudes from sin and sickness.
Christian Scientists no more believe in the action of the mortal mind to confer harmony than Christ Jesus did, because Christian Science is simply the teachings of Jesus understood and made practical, and the basis of his teaching was, "Ye shall know the truth [i.e., the infinite fact of the one and only Mind], and the truth shall make you free [from the belief in another so-called mind]." As Mrs. Eddy says in her text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 340): "'Thou shalt have no other gods before me.' (Exodus xx. 3.) The First Commandment is my favorite text. It demonstrates Christian Science ... it signifies that man shall have no other spirit or mind but God, eternal good, and that all men shall have one Mind." Evidently, therefore, the critic, who believes in the action of two minds, was not in any way capable of explaining Christian Science, which teaches unswervingly that there is but one infinite Mind, and that all true being must be the effect of this one Mind.
