About six years ago I was taken with colic while working...
About six years ago I was taken with colic while working in a lumber-yard. I told a friend who was working with me at the time, that I would not be there that afternoon, as I would have to stay at home and take some medicine. He said there was no need of staying at home for that. I asked him why, and he then told me he was a Christian Scientist and what Christian Science had done for him. I took him at his word and came back, and worked all the afternoon with no sign of the disorder. I therefore questioned him in regard to Christian Science, with the result that I borrowed his copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and read it for a week, when I bought the book for myself. I have not had this trouble again, although I had been subject to it for years.
Since coming into Christian Science I have had many demonstrations of God's power to heal the sick and sinful. Among them was a case of sciatic rheumatism. I had been working for myself in Science, but finding I could not overcome the difficulty, I applied to a Christian Science practitioner. She told me I need not fear, as the pains would leave me; so I went away knowing that God created man in His own image and likeness, not to suffer pain. I did not see any change until the next day, when the pain seemed to get worse. I called up the practitioner and told her how I was, and she assured me I would be all right. When I left the telephone I could not walk, but after sitting down a few minutes I got up and walked a half mile back in the pasture. Then I went over to one of my neighbors and back, and it seemed that the pain had all gone. Not so, however, for it came back the next morning; but it was never so painful after that, and gradually left me altogether. That was almost a year ago, and I have had no symptom of the disease since.
I have been cured of the liquor habit of long standing. I once thought when I came to town I could not go home without taking two or three drinks, but thanks be to God and to Christian Science I can pass a saloon now and not think of drinking. The tobacco habit has also been overcome with this same understanding of God and His Christ. Then, too, a very severe stomach disorder has left me, and I could name numerous other healings. How blessed it is to know we have a God who is ever present!
