In the prophecy of Isaiah we read, "And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left." Christian Scientists have much reason to be grateful for our Leader's loving wisdom, shown in the naturalness with which the teachings of Christian Science are presented. Her spiritual vision precluded the possibility of following those who, like the builders of the tower of Babel, have sought to construct an approach to God from the heaped-up phenomena of the physical senses.
The opening words of the Bible are, "In the beginning God," and scarcely less significant are the first words in the Preface to the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite." In Christian Science the definition of man follows that of God. Thus God and man, Principle and idea, are presented to view in their normal and indissoluble relationship. After Christ Jesus had instructed his disciples, he sent them forth to practise the art of healing, and today many who have been healed and uplifted through Christian Science, turn to the work of healing others. Here understanding is tested; and as facts are brought to view in a new light, questions arise in the mind of the student as to what are the best methods of working. How shall these be answered?
The reflection of divine Love carries with it the realization of peace, guidance, and protection. Mrs. Eddy, who was the pioneer for present and future ages in the discovery and demonstration of Christian Science, knew full well the need that thought be guided aright, and that human opinion be excluded from the foundation upon which Christian character should be reared. Her care to guard against the presentation in her writings of aught but pure truth, is indicated where she says, "I was only a scribe echoing the harmonies of heaven in divine metaphysics;" and again, "On what hath not a 'Thus saith the Lord,' I am as silent as the dumb centuries" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, pp. 115, 268).
