The Lectures

The introductory words of Prof. W. L. Stevens, superintendent of public schools, to the lecture on Christian Science by Virgil O. Strickler, were in part as follows:—

Christian Science is endeavoring to bring to mankind a larger view of life, which means a clearer conception of the truth. The most worthly goal of all human investigation is to know the truth. Any church, sect, or society which is earnestly endeavoring to discover truth and to apply its principles to daily living, is entitled to the profoundest respect of society. Every individual has the inherent right to pursue this quest according to the dictates of his own conscience and intelligence. It is well for all to remember that the individual or the group that has the most comprehensive grasp of truth, is the most tolerant of the beliefs of others.

Christian Science, in endeavoring to bring this larger view of life to humanity, has been singularly effective in reaching the individual. Too frequently the religious work attempts to reach only the masses, the state, or a world-kingdom, forgetting that the individual must first be quickened. It was the method of the great Teacher to step from out the multitude to reach the individual, to soothe the sorrowing, and to heal the sick. Out of individuals quickened by a keener spiritual life, efficient churches must be fashioned.
