From Our Exchanges

[The Advance]

Spiritual things are the real things. Philosophers still debate the problem of things in themselves. Are there any such things in themselves? The mind is creative. Things are all parables of spiritual realities. The deeper philosophers get into the problem of ultimate reality, the farther they get from mere dirt and the deeper into the mind as the indisputable fact. All our lessons of heaven are in terms of parables. The pearly gates, the golden streets, the glittering crowns, and the endless song are all parables of the things which "eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man." [The Christian World]

There is a spirit steadily rising in all the churches, especially among the young, which may be called a new spirit, although it is shot through and through with the most adventurous impulses of the spirit of past ages. It is new in its eager absorption of the latest knowledge, and its intolerance of all that hinders or limits its acquirement of the fullest possibilities of life; but it is old in its dissatisfaction with anything that demands only a small output of its power—in its hungry longing for some high call to give itself in generous self-abandonment. What is old in it is its desire to adventure the soul; what is new in it is its demand that the adventure shall be "among masterpieces." When it is demonstrated that in the highest and noblest sense Jesus is the greatest spiritual adventurer the world has ever known, the new spirit—which is entirely of his creation—will enter into captivity to the mastership of Christ, and therein find perfect freedom.
