Divine Guidance

An experience, the remembrance of which is continually recurring with ever-increasing thankfulness to God, may help some one to see how ever ready our heavenly Father is to help and guide us if we really turn to Him with all our hearts.

At one time, as my work was at a long distance from home, I was obliged to board, and I found a place where the family, with the exception of one member, seemed most inharmonious; but there was apparently no other place to go. As time went on, the problems connected with my work grew more serious, so that I often longed for peace and quiet in which to work them out. One late fall afternoon, when seeking a quiet place, I felt guided to take a walk up a little street where all seemed peaceful and near to God. My attention was drawn to a row of houses, some unoccupied, whose rear rooms looked into the woods and across them to the sunset. As I looked, I felt keenly that there must be a little corner there where I could be alone with God.

The winter came, and with it increasing problems in work and the uncovering of error in my thought. A physical ailment seemed stubborn, and turning away from all material help, I was led to look over the list of practitioners in The Christian Science Journal. I had done this in the fall, but no address had proved to be near my work. This time, however, divine Love had been preparing a place, for I found the address of a practitioner not only near my work, but on the very street to which I had been so drawn. When I called at one of the houses which on my first walk had not been occupied, and explained my desire for a room with Christian Scientists, I was told very kindly the reasons why the family would not be able to have me as a boarder; yet I felt I could still trust Love to lead me. Soon after this I went home for a short vacation, and for that time the thought of a new boarding place was abandoned; so it will be seen how free the circumstances were from personal effort or influence and how every step was divinely directed.
