This testimony is given in gratitude for the healing influence...

This testimony is given in gratitude for the healing influence of Christian Science. In July, 1912, my five-year-old boy was taken ill with what was said to be inflammation of the bone-marrow in the leg. An incision was made, reaching to the bone, as there was a discharge. He suffered great pain and was laid up with fever for six weeks, but worst of all was the child's dreadful sense of fear. After medical treatment of long duration he was operated upon. A splint was applied to his leg, and after five months all he could do was to move about on the floor in a sitting position. In January we went with him to Budapest, to a physician of repute, the result of whose examination was depressing. The child's leg was put in a plaster cast, and the physician said he should keep it there for several months and then have a mechanical contrivance for the purpose of reducing the shortening of the leg which had resulted from the removal of a piece of carious bone. He also said that the difference between the limbs would increase steadily, and that only through such a contrivance could the leg be brought into a position which would make the condition less apparent.

I had heard of Christian Science, and having read Der Herold der Christian Science since November previous to that time, I became desirous of consulting a Christian Science practitioner. This wonderful teaching is not yet known in our native country, and my great wish, therefore, was to take the child with me to Dresden. God guided my steps, and although my husband did not believe in Christian Science, he consented to this long railroad journey. All went well, and in Dresden the kind practitioner immediately took up treatment. The child does not know German, but only Hungarian, and he was very much afraid lest new sufferings should be inflicted upon him; yet he gladly consented to having the plaster cast removed and then crawled around on the floor. Two weeks later it became possible, for the first time, for him to wear boots, and he began to step on his foot.

After one month's treatment the boy was enabled to use his leg without any means of support. His step steadily grew firmer, and we were able to undertake our trip home without having to resort to any appliance. He is now jumping and running about, whereas according to medical prognostication he would have to learn to walk with the help of a mechanical contrivance. The shape of the leg is not entirely normal, but the wonderful result obtained thus far makes us very confident that with steady progress complete harmony will be demonstrated. It is a great blessing also that the painful and distressing experiences have left no traces on the child's mentality. He is lively and bright, and never gives the impression of one who has gone through so much suffering. Young as he is, he understands that God was and is his healer.
