Several times since my healing in Christian Science, a transformation...
Several times since my healing in Christian Science, a transformation so remarkable that I hardly dared tell intimate friends for fear of being ridiculed, I have felt prompted to give my testimony in print, as a message to fellow sufferers, which perchance may lead them to turn to the only power that can give permanent relief,—to God, good.
In February, 1908, I was healed in one treatment of a nervous disorder of twenty-seven years' duration, which was at times so severe that I was tempted to commit suicide. Since my healing I have had so many benefits and blessings, spiritual as well as physical, direct and through practitioners, that space will permit the recital of only a few. I will try to give only such incidents as seem necessary to make the testimony convincing to non-Scientists.
In 1880, being estimator in a contracting business, I established another entirely different business and tried to run both; but the worry and mental strain resulting from the effort to keep up, soon caused sleeplessness and serious mental depression. I consulted the best physicians, who prescribed the usual remedies of materia medica, including an opiate for sleeplessness. About a year after my first breakdown (in 1882), one of my physicians, an old man, told me he was satisfied that medicine would no longer help me. He said I needed rest, absence from business cares, a vacation. I replied that it was impossible to leave my business. "Well," he said, "You'll get rest, good and long, underground, if you don't take it." Startled by this evidently sincere statement, I turned my work over to others and went to Colorando, where friends nursed me for two weeks, which did wonders, and I then returned to my post.
