One of our local ministers has been delivering his soul...

One of our local ministers has been delivering his soul on the subject of "The Fallacy of Eddyism." Some persons seem to have a peculiar taste for misrepresenting, and then attacking, phases of religion which, on their own confession, they do not understand. On this occasion the preacher said it was stated that the creed of Christian Science was based on the Bible, but he failed to see it. The failure to see it surely does not mean that it cannot be true. I do not know whether it is true or not. I am not a Christian Scientist, but I have done a little logic, and I do like fair play for religious phases of thought other than my own.

I suggest another text to this gentleman, "Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, ... and we forbad him, because he followeth not us. But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me. For he that is not against us is on our part." I take it that Jesus knew what Christianity is, and to say that "Christian Science is distinctly antichristian," in the face of the above rebuke to an intolerant follower, is nonsense. "The tree is known by his fruits," and the fruits of Christian Science will bear investigation. Christian Scientists may not be orthodox in creed, and their scientific point of view may be hard to grasp, but no sane person can deny that Christian Science produces works of healing that our orthodox churches cannot produce.

The attempt to prove Christian Science unchristian by quotations from the Bible is rather ludicrous in these days. No one values the Bible more than I do. That is why I object to the taking of verses from their context and using them to prove one's own point of view. By this method one can justify slavery and polygamy and the murder of witches.
