My attention was first drawn to Christian Science through reading some articles published in a magazine in the year 1907, which though adverse to Christian Science and its Leader, served to awaken in me a great desire to know more about the subject. I had never met a Christian Scientist or seen any of the literature, for I was at the time living on a ranch several hundred miles from a Christian Science church, and how to learn something about it I did not know; but Mrs. Eddy says that "desire is prayer" (Science and Health, p. 1). After saying to the people with whom I was staying, that I believed Christian Science to be the truth, the lady of the house searched and found among some waste papers a few Christian Science Sentinels and a Journal which a friend had sent them some years before. I had much pleasure in reading these every day until the text-book came, which I sent for without loss of time. In a few days the desire for tobacco and intoxicating liquors left me, habits which had enslaved me for forty years. What I had left of these things I destroyed, together with a box full of medicine, and resolved from hanceforth to have only one God.
Having been born in Norway and raised in the Lutheran church, I adhered to that faith for twenty years or more, and then became atheistic in my views, living a life of wretchedness and dissipation, with the thought that self-destruction must be the inevitable end of it all; but, thanks be to God, this has been averted, and I have been made to rejoice in the healing and saving power of Christ. For several years my sight had been failing, and when Christian Science found me, I was wearing specially prepared lenses with very meager results. With the help of a Christian Science practitioner this affliction was soon overcome, and I have been able to read and work without glasses. I have also been healed from rheumatism, kidney and stomach troubles, etc., and have not been sick a day for over five years.
These are the very least of my blessings through Christian Science. The little knowledge I have gained of Truth, and the spiritual uplift it has given me, are blessings that I cannot explain, nor can I describe or express my feeling of gratitude to our Father-Mother God, and to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who through her pure life and labor of love for humanity, has been the instrument in God's hand for revealing anew the healing truth to a suffering world.
