In February, 1911, while walking along the street in...

In February, 1911, while walking along the street in Atlanta, I slipped and fell, striking my knee against the pavement and injuring it severely. A surgeon was called, who examined the injury, and said that owing to the nature of the fracture and my age, he doubted whether I would ever be able to walk unless an operation were performed. I refused to have the operation, and the next day I was brought to my house in Columbus. Two of the best surgeons in the city were consulted, and after an examination they both gave it as their opinion that the knee must be laid open and the broken bone wired together. They also urged that this be done at once; but I feared the operation, and would not consent to have it performed. I insisted that they bandage the knee and give the bones time to knit together. This they did, and after ten days they removed the bandages and said there was little or no union of the pieces of bone, and unless these pieces were wired together, I would not be able to walk without dragging my left limb.

A friend who is a Christian Scientist called to see me, and I told her what the doctors had said, and asked her to find a Christian Science practitioner for me, as I was in a state of fear and dread, and was also suffering much pain. The practitioner came, and it was not long before the pain was allayed and the fear dispelled. She gave me two weeks' treatment, and I am thankful to say that although I did not have the operation, I can walk anywhere I wish to go, and can run up and down steps. I was also healed of a serious throat trouble at the same time. When the doctors saw that I would walk, they said that there was no bony union of that knee-cap, that the union was only fibrous, that a fibrous union would stretch, so that I would eventually be obliged to have the operation; but I thank God that through Christian Science these man-made laws have been broken.

For these and many other blessings which have come to me through Christian Science, I feel deeply grateful to God, to Christ Jesus the Wayshower, and to Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science. I am also grateful for the privileges I so much enjoy,—for the reading-room, for our services, and for the kind friends who brought me this precious truth. I am praying for more understanding, and for that Mind which was also in Christ Jesus.
