Brooklyn (N. Y.) Eagle

In the lecture in All Souls Universalist church, Flatbush, reported in the Eagle, the critic vouchsafed his estimate of Christian Science, and gave his "survey of the essential facts in the life of Mrs. Eddy." Under the circumstances, it is a matter of importance to state that the "essential facts" in Mrs. Eddy's life have been painstakingly set forth in Sibyl Wilbur's biography of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. This volume has now assumed large historical value. After studying this book, the unbiased reader will pay willing respect to Mrs. Eddy's demonstrated position in the world of "broad culture and knowledge of intellectual movements." It is my humble personal conviction, based on several months' intimate association with the Leader of the Christian Science movement in her own home, that her refinement and intellectual perspicacity so far transcended the average attainment of these virtues as to enable her to do precisely what she did do, namely, become the spiritual seer of this age. By her self-effacement and applied spiritual understanding, Mrs. Eddy has aroused dormant spiritual qualities in enough men to establish for all time the spiritual facts of existence. She completely reversed the false material hypotheses which have prevailed and been responsbile for the dominance of human misery—sin, sickness, and death. The critic may learn from a mere beginner in Christian Science that spiritual healing such as Christian Science teaches, and such as resulted from Jesus' practical Christianity, is not the least akin to hypnotism, suggestion, or mental healing as he understands it.
