When I but dimly realized the great Principle of Christian Science,...
When I but dimly realized the great Principle of Christian Science, its glorious truth was brought home forcibly to me by a somewhat serious accident which happened to me a few weeks after I had started seriously to study Mrs. Eddy's various works. While cycling down a very steep hill, I lost control of my machine, with the result that I was thrown violently from it. I was picked up unconscious and taken to the nearest hospital, where the doctors said that the injury to my head was rather serious and that they would not be surprised if I did not regain consciousness for two or three days. They described my injuries as concussion, two slight fractures of the skull, and various cuts and bruises on my head and body.
That same afternoon, at my mother's request, a Christian Science practitioner started to treat me, with the result that I regained complete consciousness the evening of the accident, and during the next day I was absolutely relieved of all pain, which at first had been extremely acute. I was only detained at the hospital a little over one week, in order that the wounds should heal, and the doctors and nurses were dumfounded at what they considered an almost miraculous recovery.
The day after leaving the hospital I was able to walk about without the slightest assistance, and only a little over a fortnight after the accident I was able to return to the horticultural college where I am studying, perfectly recovered, and in an absolutely fit condition to do digging, etc., in the gardens, and to take eight lectures a week. Since then I have been a sincere student of Christian Science, each day receiving more happiness and enlightenment from the study of it, and being able to overcome for myself lesser ills than the one mentioned. Here I would like to express my great thankfulness and deep gratitude for this proof of God's love and omnipotence, and also for Mrs. Eddy's writings, which have been the means of bringing to my understanding the wonderful truths taught by Christ Jesus and now restated in Christian Science.
