LARGER GRATITUDE

At our Wednesday meeting in a small place in the province of Saskatchewan, we do not have large gatherings, our society having been but recently organized, and while engaged recently in the very necessary preparatory work for this evening meeting, I felt for a moment that I had no great demonstration of healing to give, and consequently nothing to say. Then this phrase from our Lesson-Sermon flashed across my thought: "I will mention the loving-kindness of the Lord," and I saw it was my bounden duty to express my gratitude for all that Christian Science has done to make existence harmonious and joyful.

Then I realized that it is exactly this mental attitude which gives expression to gratitude, which enables us to receive more, and thus to continue our giving, for the very same reason that a mirror which reflects the sunbeam is able to continue reflecting it. If it absorbed the ray of light falling upon it, no reflection would be in evidence. A very helpful article in the Sentinel once explained the "river of water of life" mentioned in Revelation, as the constant flow of the thoughts of divine Love to man; that is, when we express our gratitude, we become a channel for the outflow of divine Mind. Any vacuum, so to speak, which may result from our giving, is instantaneously filled with good from the never-ceasing flow of Love. Thus is it with all true giving. Giving and receiving are one, for God, ever-present Love, is the source of all being.

Since the moon gives again the sunlight, it is seen by mortals who dwell in darkness, and thus as we reflect the light of Truth we have our place in God's universe; otherwise, though we may have a seeming existence, we emit to others no effulgence, no proof of our divine sonship. Here it is well to recall our revered Leader's words (Science and Health, p. 298): "As a cloud hides the sun it cannot extinguish, so false belief silences for a while the voice of immutable harmony, but false belief cannot destroy Science armed with faith, hope, fruition."
