A sense of deep gratitude is the motive that prompts me...
A sense of deep gratitude is the motive that prompts me to tell of the blessings which I have received through Christian Science and through the revelation of divine Love. When some two years ago I first heard of this wonderful teaching, I was sick in mind and body. I had been suffering for years with very severe pain caused by an abdominal trouble, and although I hardly ever was without medical help and did not lack the opportunity for resting, the trouble increased in severity as time went on. To my sense of fear were now added mental depression and discouragement as well as other ailments. I suffered frequently with a throat trouble and swelling of the legs, and hardly a day went by without my experiencing pain. To make the measure full, a lung trouble manifested itself, so that I gave up all hope of recovery. In order to relieve the latter, my physician resorted to powerful remedies, besides which a change of climate seemed necessary every year; yet it all proved of no avail. I may say here that I often wished death would relieve me, for a life so full of sorrow and sickness seemed not worth living.
In my greatest need I experienced God's help, for some dear people told me about Christian Science. We lived in Hannover at that time, where I could attend the Wednesday evening meeting and Sunday service. I also read much in Der Herold der Christian Science, but although I earnestly sought God in my distress, I did not seem to be able to understand the teaching at first, everything being so different from what I had been taught. From the start, however, I felt very much inclined toward going to church, and I soon found that I could not get along without attending the services regularly. It was my privilege to do so for a year and a half, then we moved away; but I would like to state here that the hours spent in that Christian Science church were the most inspiring of my life. How many wonderful things it has been my good fortune to hear and to assimilate there! I am unspeakably grateful to God for having led me to the true understanding of man's being.
All my troubles have disappeared without further medical help. After I gained some understanding of the Christteaching, I immediately began to make demonstrations along lines such as I would find described in Der Herold, and till this day I have not been laid up even for a day. I am also able to make long walking tours without experiencing the slightest pain; in short, I am in good health. I had four treatments in Christian Science for a severe ailment of ten years' standing, and this very ailment, which had seemed to us the most serious one, disappeared readily through the action of divine power, before which the greatest error vanishes into nothingness.
