I wish to express my gratitude for the many blessings...
I wish to express my gratitude for the many blessings which Christian Science has brought to me and mine during the past year. My husband works at a furnace for melting steel, and one day, when he was opening the tap to pour in the hot metal, the gas used in melting it exploded, blowing the material which plugged up the tap-hole all over the side of his face and one arm and shoulder, burning him severely. None of the men could get to him, as he was in such a dangerous place. He said his first thought was "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468), and he also said it seemed as though a hand led him away from the danger.
As it is one of the rules that any one who is injured at the works must go to the company's emergency hospital, he allowed them to dress the wounds the first time, then he came home alone. This was about three in the afternoon; then I called a Christian Science practitioner, and in half an hour she was at our house. She treated him, and he read in Science and Health for a couple of hours, after which he fell asleep. He went to bed at his usual time and did not wake up until morning, the pain being overcome that first night. He went to work in a week, and in less than two weeks shaved the side of his face which had been burned. It healed perfectly, without a scar. Another man burned in the same way, who was under a doctor's care, was in the hospital three weeks, and it was two weeks more before he was able to go to work. We were indeed grateful that we knew of Christian Science and that it is a help in every time of need.
My own healing was from poisoning caused by an ingrowing toe-nail. It spread rapidly, and strange to say it also started on the other foot. I asked the practitioner who treated my husband to help me. I was not, however, healed quickly, as I was not obedient and wanted my own way. The practitioner knew that I understood what my part of the work was, so after she had treated me for several weeks with but very little result, she asked if I were obedient. I told her no, but that I would be. I then put down my own self-will, the desire to look at the foot and to make a reality of the disease, and I was healed in less than a week, and there has been no return of the trouble. I am very thankful for this healing and glad of the lesson it taught me. During this time I saw what self-will and self-justification really mean. I have been helped many times through Christian Science and have not taken a drop of medicine for over five years. I was healed two years ago of measles and acute lung trouble in less than a week. Abnormal growths in my nose were overcome during treatment for something else. They had interfered with my speech, and the family doctor wanted to operate for them, shortly after I became interested in Christian Science, but he soon saw there was no need to use the knife. I am, however, more grateful for the spiritual awakening that has come to me than for all the other things.
