Champaign (Ill.) Gazette
In a recent issue Mr. Spooner takes exception to my use of the verse from Philippians, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus," claiming that this passage should no more be connected with the healing of sickness than with the social mission of the church. Perhaps it would be still more accurate to say that this mind "which was also in Christ Jesus" should no more be associated with the healing of sickness than with the healing of sin, and vice versa. This, broadly speaking, covers the entire mission of the Christian church, and Christian Scientists believe that the Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus" is the only real basis for the hope of mankind to be saved from sickness as well as from sin. Mrs. Eddy says on page 135 of Science and Health: "The same power which heals sin heals also sickness. This is 'the beauty of holiness,' that when Truth casts the sick, it casts out evils, and when Truth casts out the evil called disease, it heals the sick."
Those who have studied the text-book of Christian Science know that its author does not minimize the sacrifice made by Jesus that he might become the Wayshower for mankind. In the chapter, Atonement and Eucharist, Mrs. Eddy, referring to the crucifixion, says: "The burden of that hour was terrible beyond human conception. The distrust of mortal minds, disbelieving the purpose of his mission, was a million times sharper than the thorns which pierced his flesh. The real cross, which Jesus bore up the hill of grief, was the world's hatred of Truth and Love" (Science and Health, p. 50).
Christian Science teaches, however, that even so great a sacrifice as this would have been without avail had not Jesus in that experience proved the efficacy of Christ to overcome even the "last enemy."
