Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch

The evangelist has had many harsh things to say of Christian Science in his sermons, and I would be glad if you would give me space in your columns to say a few words in behalf of this new Christian teaching. If the things that the critic condemns were really taught in Christian Science, it would be right that they should be condemned, but it happens that these things are not taught, and if they were they would be repudiated by the followers of Christian Science just as quickly as the critic would repudiate them. Although maligned, I am sure those who have accepted this faith will harbor no sense of rancor toward him, no matter what he has said or may say in the future. In ninety-nine cases out of a hundred they stood just where he now stands on this subject before they had investigated Christian Science and were ready to accept as true its revolutionary teachings.

The real test of any doctrine is its results. The good fruits of Christian Science are certainly apparent to the most casual observer; and the fact that new Christian Science churches are being organized at the rate of one every four days speaks volumes for the prosperity and success of this mighty movement. Probably its real strength is in the healthier, happier, and spiritually-awakened living it has brought to thousands of its followers, in homes brightened, in health and harmony restored.

Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." That Christian Science has brought this new birth of freedom and the more abundant life the Master also promised, unnumbered thousands are ready to testify. Critics may condemn what they think Christian Science is, but those who have accepted its teachings and are applying them, look up to Christian Science with blessings. In the midst of censure these followers will be comforted with the thought that, in the words of the Founder of the movement, "Truth will not be forever hidden by unjust parody from the quickened sense of the people" (Science and Health, p. 343).
