Feelings of profound gratitude inspire me to tell of a remarkable healing experienced during the month of April, 1911, hoping that thereby others may be led to know the truth and turn from the material to the spiritual for healing of the body as well as of the mind. Suddenly, and without any previous warning, I was stricken with what is known as inflammatory rheumatism. According to the physical senses, I was absolutely helpless, and I suffered untold agony whenever it became necessary for the nurse to move me in the bed or change my position in the least degree. My feet and hands were terribly swollen, and my body was racked with fever.

To sense I cut a sorry figure indeed; but rejoice to think, as my mind reverts to those unhappy experiences, that the precious truth which I had previously learned from the Bible, as interpreted and illumined by Mrs. Eddy's inspired text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," is pregnant with power to heal our infirmities and emancipate us from the false belief in sin, disease, and death. With this spiritual knowledge sustaining me, even in my physical distress, I invoked the aid of a Christian Science practitioner. After three weeks' treatment I was able to leave my bed and walk around the room unassisted, and three weeks later I visited the practitioner at her office. This is all the more remarkable in view of the fact that I was able to step on and off the street-car without help. My healing was complete, and I rejoice to say that none of the ill effects which in the old belief so often follow this disease, have remained.

To me this healing has been a perfect and conclusive demonstration of the marvelous works that can be and daily are being accomplished by Christian Science. But independent of the physical healing there is the absolute conviction that Christian Science is the great and only ark of safety for all mankind. When spiritually understood, it lifts us above all the petty and distracting cares and troubles of material existence; it reveals to us the nothingness of matter and the allness of Spirit, Life, Truth, Love. The unreality of sin, disease, and death is made clear to us through its wonderful teachings. It conquers fear, the arch-enemy of mankind; it inculcates right thinking and right living; it fills our lives with the sunshine of optimism; it enables us to "stand porter at the door of thought" (Science and Health, p. 392), to shut out the suggestions of evil, and to see with clearer vision the good that abounds in everything about us.
