The Lectures

A large and appreciative audience gathered in Wakefield Town Hall to listen to Virgil O. Strickler, who set forth the teaching and aim of Christian Science. The lecture was given under the auspices of First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Reading. Maj. H. W. Whitten presided, and made the following introductory address:—

Lack of understanding is the cause of all the evil in human experience. We try to measure God by human standards or comparisons, and fail miserably. God is infinite good, and in proportion as we recognize this fact, we experience good. Jesus the Christ said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Christ Jesus told us what truth is, but many do not wish to receive it. It involves the giving up of too many pet beliefs; it requires self-surrender and self-effacement. The injunction to become as a little child is literal. The saying of Jesus, that having eyes ye see not, and having ears ye hear not, is as applicable today as when said by the Wayshower.

I know that even a glimpse of the truth will work wonders, and but for such a glimpse, I myself, instead of being here today, would long since have perished, a victim of drink. It is indeed a reason for great thankfulness that Mrs. Eddy was born to this age, that she might give us a clear vision and a correct hearing of Christ's teachings through "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
