An early experience in Christian Science has always remained...
An early experience in Christian Science has always remained clearly in my thought, showing how God leads when we begin to reach out to Him. I had very little understanding of Christian Science, but had an earnest desire to know and follow the Christ in what appeared to me to be a higher way than I had thus far known. One day, while trimming my toe-nails, the scissors slipped and cut the flesh of the toe, and the thought came that serious results might follow. I recalled a newspaper article which I had read a few days before about a man of prominence who had a similar accident, and who in a few days died from poisoning. I tried to banish the fear from my thought, but in due time the same condition was manifested which had been so vividly pictured in the newspaper.
I strove to overcome this condition with my slight understanding, but when my mother discovered me examining the foot, she insisted on doing something; and as the condition grew more painful and alarming I allowed her to wrap the foot in cold compresses that night, and in consequence of the added fear I could not sleep. As the following day wore away and the foot seemingly grew worse, she urged me to call either a doctor or a Christian Science practitioner. We were strangers in this place, as we had recently come from Mexico; but I was eager to hear and learn more of Christian Science. This being Wednesday evening, I ventured to say that with my mother's help and the use of a large shoe I might go to the testimony meeting, and that as we went along we could look for a doctor's sign; but if we did not see one, I knew I had seen a practitioner's sign near the church. As I did really desire God's help, I found the Christian Science practitioner, who was ready and able to speak the word of Truth and cast out the error.
I was so uplifted by the treatment, and so interested in the words spoken to me afterward, that I had gone down the steps and part of the way around the corner to the church, talking eagerly to my mother, when suddenly I took her by the arm and said that I had forgotten about my injured foot. I went into the church and walked home after the meeting without pain or fear. The foot healed rapidly, with no further discomfort, and I have never again gone out looking for a doctor's sign to lead me to health.
