After a long and faithful quest for righteousness, forced...

After a long and faithful quest for righteousness, forced to turn away from creeds and dogmas because I found them only spiritual barrenness, fruitless fig-trees, I feel that I was led by a higher power to know and prove the teachings of Christian Science, and I gladly testify to my marvelous awakening.

In May, 1905, I took up my residence in Rome, Ga., thinking to myself, "Well, I won't be annoyed with any Christian Scientists in this town, at any rate, for no one here knows that my people are interested in it." My thought fitly expressed the ingratitude of mortals, for both my parents had been healed of many diseases, my mother having been literally saved from the grave, eighteen years before, through the study of this inexhaustible subject.

All this time I had been making every effort to run away from the only remedy which could afford surcease from my discordant conditions, and their name was "Legion." There came a day, when like Paul I was on the road to Damascus, ready to condemn and persecute any one who mentioned to me a word of true Christianity, or Christian Science. The morning mail brought a letter from my parents in answer to an appeal from me asking for a hint, or even a word, through which I might be lifted out of intense mental suffering, loneliness, and misery. Evidently there was an inherent unconscious desire for a higher attainment of life experience, and it came in God's way, not mine. On opening the letter, I read these brief, disappointing words: "'One with God is a majority.' Some day you will know this, dear child, and you will never be lonely again." Filled with utter despair over this, to me, meaningless statements, I angrily tossed the letter into the grate, feeling that I had asked for "bread" and had been given a "stone." That day was of all days a most wretched one. Everything went wrong. In my mad human endeavor to get people and things out of my way, I utterly failed to see the wonderful opportunities that were knocking at my door.
