In my early childhood I had a fever which caused a serious impairment of my vision and also produced that condition which is commonly called cross-eyed. Gradually the sight returned to one eye, but the other never seemed to become normal. When I began to attend school, it was necessary for me to be fitted with glasses, which I wore for more than ten years, having to change them very often until they became a burden on account of the thickness of the lenses. During the fall of 1908 and spring of 1909, I found it necessary to consult a prominent oculist in one of the large western cities, who after careful examination, measuring of distances of sight, etc., prescribed various remedies and lotions. His instructions were very faithfully followed, but finally in April, 1909, he advised that it would be best to leave my work for two months or more; also that it would be well to secure other employment, such as would not require a constant application of my eyes to the reading, writing, and like work I was then doing, as my eyes were not fitted for it. I had received, little benefit from the different medical treatments received, but on the contrary had become so fearful and hopeless that life did not seem worth living.

When the specialist advised me to give up my work and seek other employment, the outlook seemed very discouraging. As I learned later, however, divine Love is always present and ready to help and guide. On the Sunday at the beginning of the week during which I intended to leave the city to try some other kind of work, I heard about Christian Science from a dear friend. His was a plain and honest statement of benefits received, and it kindled a new hope within me. He gave me the address of a practitioner whom I went to see the next day. I received a treatment and was advised to purchase a copy of Science and Health and study for myself; I was also told that I could remove my glasses and go back to my work. I did not believe it possible, but when on my way to my room to get the money with which to purchase a copy of the text-book, feeling that all material props had been knocked out, I decided to leave my glasses at my room and go to my work that afternoon without them. I accordingly returned to my work and performed all that was necessary and required of me that afternoon, much to the surprise of those working with me. I received treatment for a short time after the first day, but was able to continue with my work and have not experienced any trouble whatever on account of my eyes since that time.

I have had many proofs of the power of Truth since that first experience, not the least being a better ability to work harmoniously with my fellow men, the overcoming of a bad temper, and the finding of a sure foundation. I know that in Christian Science I have found an understanding of God which is practical and applicable to all my work. This understanding has brought a spiritual enlightenment, giving a freedom and peace which are far more significant than the physical healing. Several of the men working with me at the time of my healing have become interested in Christian Science, and they in turn have received benefits which have caused others to investigate. I cannot fully express my gratitude in words, and realize that my best testimonial will be found in living this blessed truth which truly has come "to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind."
