Dundee (Scot.) Telegraph

My attention has been called to a paragraph in the Evening Telegraphic and Post of Friday [Dec. 22], in which you quote a sentence or two—Christian Science is neither Christian nor scientific—from the Daily Express, which I feel sure, do not commend themselves either to your judgment or to the good feeling of Scotsmen in general. Through long centuries we gave of our bravest and best to win the political and religious freedom which we now enjoy, and I am greatly mistaken if we are now prepared to surrender these priceless possessions.

Britons would indeed be in a sorry plight if sane people of full age were denied the free selection of minister and physician, and were to be subjected to drugging and dosing at the instance of a grandmotherly government. Christian Science is fully entitled to its name; it is wholly founded on the teachings of the gospel, and is an earnest and thoughtful endeavor to obey all the commands of the Saviour, including his injunction to heal the sick. That it has been highly successful is self-evident. The bitter opposition with which it has been met is provoked by the striking results obtained by the ever increasing numbers who are joining its ranks, and by the marked changes in public opinion which it has effected. It is scientific because it is wholly logical, being entirely deduced from the Scriptural definitions of God as the only cause and creator; as infinite, all-wise, ever-present good; as Life, Truth, Love, Spirit.

Far from nourishing the neurotic tendency of the age, it is the one and only thing which will wholly eradicate this tendency, as it insists upon the paramount necessity of self-discipline, obedience to law, courage, and cheerfulness. It corrects credulity by training its students in logical thought, by removing God from the realm of mystery, and by bringing the men of the present day into such close relationship to the Supreme Being that they too may learn in their heart of hearts to call Him Father, and to recognize with joyful humility His controlling love guiding them through the perplexed paths of our complicated modern life, as it once led Israel across the desert sands of the simple old world. I myself and hundreds of others have been healed by Christian Science after failing to get relief from some of the kindest and most eminent physicians the country possesses.
